Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was discovered by studio head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production of Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello was not asked to be a part of The Mickey Mouse Club cast in its first season, much at her Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' disappointment. Disney did the right thing in making the decision as Funicello soon became the major character in The Mickey Mouse Club. Also, she had her own story of adventure, Adventures in Dairyland. Funicello's potential as a teenage superstar was soon realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata an established arranger to aid her with her recording career. Annette, however, was not too thrilled about Funicello singing. Funicello could become comfortable with the concept recording music, and enjoyed being with Camerata. She was among those who, at forty, could to understand the building blocks of rock. Annette Sings Anka was the third studio album and was probably the first album to incorporate the songs of rock stars as part of the repertoire. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. This was the first in a series of films about beach parties that were hugely popular. The scripts for all of the films were read and approved personally by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected.
